Sasuke arrives and his match with Gaara can now begin. Using taijutsu that he learned from Lee, Sasuke can keep Gaara busy, and still move too fast for Gaara to hit him. With no other options, Gaara completely encases himself in a ball of sand. As Gaara protects himself and builds up an immense amount of chakra, Sasuke also prepares a new jutsu that he has learned. Using Chidori, Sasuke penetrated Gaara’s defense and wounded him. Before Sasuke could finish the match, Orochimaru and the ninjas from Sunagakure attack Konohagakure. Now the fight between the Third Hokage and Orochimaru begins.
The Chûnin Exams finally conclude with no clear victor. Sasuke truly played up the drama aspect and waited until the very last minute to show up. Better late than never, I suppose. The match between Gaara and Sasuke was short but even if it were to continue, I don’t think Gaara would have been victorious. With only one strike from Chidori, Sasuke fatally wounded Gaara. Gaara seemed to be incapable of accepting the fact that he has been wounded and did not appear that he could go on. Though it was short, it was still a great fight nonetheless.
Sasuke had the character development this time around. It was not long ago that he had lost to Rock Lee, now Sasuke can match Rock Lee’s speed, and taijutsu. Also, considering the fact that Sasuke was able to learn one of the most advanced and original jutsu ever created by Kakashi. As to what I had previously said, it appears that I was correct in saying that Kakashi would train Sasuke to be just like him. Sasuke completely blew me away here, I had thought that he would be the only person to be able to defeat Gaara, but I had also thought that Gaara could possibly defeat Sasuke. Both ninjas have amazing and possibly still unseen skills and abilities.
A lot had happened and pushed the story further along in this volume. It was a little hard to watch as the Third Hokage was attacked by Orochimaru. We had seen a build up to this in previous volumes, but still it was hard to watch as Konohagakure was attacked by Sunagakure. I only hope that the Third Hokage can hold on until help arrives. I can’t wait to read the next volume and see what happens.
The events that had transpired in this volume have me more excited than ever to continue this series. I still have many questions in regards to who got promoted to Chûnin and who survived the attack on the village. I hope that these questions and more will be answered in the next volume. I was shocked at how this volume ended and eagerly look forward to seeing this war between villages unfold. Naruto volume 13 was a fantastic read.
