Jiraiya, the toad sage, continues Naruto’s training after Ebisu falls unconscious. Through rigorous training Naruto is now capable of the art of summoning. Yet Naruto still lacks the ability to tap into his chakra to produce greater results. Through a “trial by fire” Naruto was able to tap into the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox and summon Gama Bunta, the chief toad.  After the summoning, Naruto collapses and wakes up in the hospital. After a brief conversation with Shikamaru, Naruto and Shikamaru find that Gaara has infiltrated the hospital with the intent to kill Rock Lee. Gaara may have succeeded if Might Guy had not interfered. After a short time later the finals of the Chûnin Selection Exams begin.

Naruto had a huge development in this volume. He isn’t capable of using the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox anytime he wishes, but he is able to call upon it during a life threatening situation. Also Jaraiya was able to remove a seal placed on Naruto to better allow him to balance his chakra. Even with these developments I wonder if it will be enough to best Neji in combat. Neji is said to be the strongest among the Genin and with the help of his Byakugan, Naruto is sure to have a hard time.

Jaraiya and Naruto have the most humorous conversations. Even from their first meeting, Naruto harassed Jaraiya for being a pervert and for knocking his teacher unconscious. Jaraiya did what was expected of him and continued Naruto’s training. Though Jaraiya was only in the volume for a few chapters, I am certain that he will return soon. In a mere 21 days Naruto was able to control his chakra, learn the artof  summing, and tap into the chakra of the Nine-Tailed Fox. It is clear that Jaraiya should train Naruto all of the time.

Gaara also has a bit of a development in regards to his past. We have found out that Gaara also has a beast inside of him, much like Naruto. This immediately presented a new connection between Naruto and Gaara. It would appear that if the circumstances had been different, Naruto could have ended up in a state similar to the state that Gaara is in. It was known that Gaara had possesd immense strength and capable fighting abilities, now we know why. I would like to hopefully see a fight between Naruto and Gaara some time in the future.

Sasuke has yet to actually show up in this volume. We catch a small glimpse of him training with Kakashi but that is it. I cannot wait to see what new techniques he may have developed during his training. As Sasuke is fighting Gaara in the finals, he will need something powerful enough to stop him.

This volume offered several developments and progressed the story a fair amount. I cannot wait to see how the finals conclude and see who survives. The stage has been set for amazing events to take place. Naruto volume 11 was a phenomenal read, I highly recommend it.
