The Straw Hat crew makes their way to reunite with Nami. Little do they know that Nami is in league with Arlong, and was only pretending to be part of the Straw Hats in order to steal their treasure. Just as Luffy and his crew were going to confront Nami, Nojiko, Nami’s step sister, explains Nami’s past to the Straw Hats. A heavy responsibility has fallen to Nami 8 years ago, and Nami is close to her resolution. Even if Nami completes her end of the deal, will Arlong live up to his end?
I just want to start off by saying that this is the saddest volume that I have ever read in my. Everything that Nami has done has literally been for the sake of others. Not only does she bare the burden of freeing her entire village on her back, but she also saved Usopp’s life. Nojiko explained Nami’s history perfectly and completely removed all of my doubt. Nami
This volume was nearly 100% story and developments, with some action sprinkled throughout. This volume was also completely focused on Nami and most every aspect regarding her. At first glance Nami would seem like nothing more than a common thief that robs pirates, however she is quite multidimensional and has so much more going on beneath the surface. It is very seldom that we find a character with such a rich background and, a seemingly tragic life. Nami may have actually just became my favorite character in this series.
In terms of character developments this whole volume was a development for Nami. She has so far and accomplished so much. Truth be told not much really happened in this volume. I have already disclosed more than I would like, but I think it was needed to paint the proper picture. On the final page we see Luffy knock down the door to Arlong’s Park, and confront Arlong. So I am certain that we will see more of that in the next volume.
One Piece volume 9 was a solid entry into the series and, stands tall on its own. Given what we have seen in regards to Arlong’s strength, Luffy may have a bit more of a problem with Arlong, than he had with any other adversary. In any case I look forward to the conflict and it’s resolution. I also cannot wait to see what happens to Nami and her village. One Piece volume 9 was a fantastic read.
